Software and Safety Interlocks: The Device’s Mistake-Proofing Layer
What Interlocks Are For
Operator error is inevitable; mature systems answer by making mistakes recoverable: interlocks stop the error path before it reaches skin. They are the true watershed of device safety — telling you more about an engineering culture than any spec sheet.
Core Interlock List
- Handpiece ID: chip-tagged handpieces/cartridges identify size, focal depth and shot counts; unauthorized parts are refused (also blocks counterfeit consumables).
- Parameter caps: energy/frequency/pulse combinations limited per applicator type.
- Thermal monitoring: handpiece, water and capacitor limits derate or stop the system.
- E-stop: physical emergency stop plus foot-pedal logic (no accidental firing).
- Boot self-test: source, cooling and interlock chain checked; faults block firing.
- Key/permission tiers: operator/physician/engineer levels.
Buying Checklist
- Interrupt the cooling — does it refuse to fire? (Test on site.)
- Does a non-original cartridge get identified and blocked?
- Can a standard operator account lift energy caps?
- Are fault logs exportable? (Tracing and service both depend on them.)
FAQ
Do interlocks hurt throughput?
Good ones are invisible; clinics that ask vendors to disable interlocks “for speed” trade seconds for disproportionate accident cost.
Can interlocks be added later by software?
Sometimes — it depends on hardware sensors. Buy on factory configuration, not on upgrade promises.
