The Laser Safety Officer: The Institutional Skeleton of Laser Safety

The Laser Safety Officer is the core role in international laser-safety frameworks (ANSI Z136 series, requirements around IEC 60601-2-22): one person, or one post, accountable for device classification, training, protective equipment and incident prevention across the facility. Even where local rules don’t mandate the title, staffing the function is dual best practice — compliance and safety.

1. Inventory and classification: register every laser/light source with class and use.
2. Documents: safety SOPs, authorized-user list, signage and zone rules.
3. People: operating authorization, annual training, eyewear provision and testing.
4. Environment: access control and warning lights, window coverage, reflective-surface management.
5. Incidents: investigation flow for eye exposures and skin events (links to adverse events).
