Laser Eyewear: Wavelength Matching and Optical Density Selection
The Selection Logic
Laser eyewear attenuates specific wavelengths; two parameters decide everything: wavelength match (the filter band must cover the device’s output — 1064 nm glasses do not stop 532 nm) and optical density (each OD step is 10× attenuation; pick OD4-7+ by class and power). Wrong “protection” equals bare eyes.
Sample Selection Table
| Device wavelength | Filter band | Typical OD |
|---|---|---|
| 755/808/1064 nm (hair removal) | 700-1100 nm | OD5+ |
| 532 nm (doubled) | 532 band | OD5+ |
| CO2 10600 nm | 10.6 μm (heat protection; standard polycarbonate blocks) | Per manual |
| IPL broadband | Full block (opaque goggles) | Complete opacity |
Management Discipline
- Ledger: every pair labeled with band and OD, mapped to devices.
- Inspection: monthly checks for scratches, coating damage, loose frames — damaged means retired.
- Patient protection: opaque shields (metal or adhesive) for patients; corneal shields (metal cups) for eyelid work — different items from operator eyewear.
- Training: donning and emergency procedures before first solo duty.
FAQ
Nearsighted patients?
Opaque shields that fit over prescription glasses; ordinary lenses never substitute for certified protection.
Lifespan of eyewear?
No fixed years — condition rules: scratches, coating peel-off or deformation retire the pair. Record purchase and inspection dates in the ledger.
