How to Verify a Supplier’s FDA Claim in 10 Minutes (Aesthetic Devices)

Suppliers know buyers ask about FDA status, so claims are engineered to survive that first question. The reliable test is not a nicer PDF — it is the official databases themselves, which are free and public. This walkthrough takes about ten minutes and works for any aesthetic device: laser hair removal machines, IPL units, RF systems, HIFU.

Step 0: Ask for four things in writing

Step 1: Verify the 510(k) number (about 3 minutes)

Open the FDA 510(k) database and search the K number, then check all five fields:

A K number for “a similar platform from the same factory” is not a clearance for your device. Clearance attaches to a specific model and applicant.

Step 2: Verify establishment registration and device listing (about 3 minutes)

Open the Establishment Registration & Device Listing database. Search the company name or registration number and check:

Remember the hierarchy from our registered vs cleared vs approved guide: registration alone means FDA has reviewed nothing about the device.

Step 3: Lasers only — the second track most buyers never check

A 510(k) clearance is not the only US requirement for a laser product. Laser devices must also comply with the federal laser product performance standard (21 CFR 1040), and the manufacturer must file a product report with FDA’s CDRH center — you can ask for the accession number and the IEC 60825-based test report. FDA summarizes this on its laser products and instruments page.

A device with a K number but no laser product report is still not fully compliant for the US market — and this is the single most common gap we see when buyers audit quotations.

Step 4: Decode the wording

What the supplier saysWhat it actually means
“FDA certified”No such thing exists. FDA issues no device certificates.
“FDA registered factory”Only the facility filed registration. Says nothing about the device.
“FDA approved”Class III / PMA language. Virtually no aesthetic device has this.
“FDA cleared”510(k) for a specific model — verify it yourself in Step 1.
“Same factory as [famous brand]”Irrelevant. Clearance attaches to the model and applicant, not the building.

Red flags — walk away or demand proof

Copy-paste email to request documents

Subject: Compliance documents request — [Model name / quotation No.]

Before we proceed with the purchase, please provide: (1) the 510(k) number for this exact model, with the applicant name as it appears in the FDA database; (2) your FDA Establishment Registration number and owner/operator name; (3) the Device Listing entry (device name + product code); (4) for lasers, the CDRH accession number and IEC 60825 test report. We verify all numbers in the public FDA databases before issuing a purchase order.

What if the databases show nothing?

Then the device is not cleared, however the quotation is worded. You can still buy it for markets where it is lawful — CE and other marks are compared in our CE vs FDA vs NMPA guide — but plan the US channel accordingly.
