Red Light vs Blue Light: The Repair Route and the Antibacterial Route
Two Mechanisms
- Blue (415 nm): coproporphyrin III produced by C. acnes absorbs blue light and generates singlet oxygen, selectively killing bacteria — a photochemical action targeting the bacteria itself, within superficial layers.
- Red (630-660 nm): absorbed by mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, raising ATP and repair signaling — photobiomodulation targeting the body’s own metabolism, penetrating 1-3 mm into dermis.
Combination Logic for Acne
The acne chain runs blockage → bacterial growth → inflammation → scarring: blue handles “bacteria”, red handles “inflammation and repair” — blue first, red second covers both ends, the design logic of combo panels. Studies favor blue+red over blue alone.
Practical Session Order
- Cleanse/exfoliate prep
- Blue 10-15 minutes (antibacterial)
- Red, or red+NIR, 10-20 minutes (repair)
- Infusion or occlusive mask
Home Device Buying Points
- Accurate wavelength labeling (415±10 nm / 633±10 nm), not generic “red”.
- Measured irradiance (≥30 mW/cm² to be clinically meaningful).
- Array uniformity at facial distance.
FAQ
Is overexposure harmful?
Both are UV-free and low-energy with no significant risk in proper use; avoid photosensitizing drugs and direct eye exposure (wear opaque goggles).
Why so many blue-light sessions?
Photochemical killing only works on bacteria present at that moment — follicles recolonize, so weekly coverage across the acne cycle is needed, best combined with medication.
