NMPA Class III: The Compliance Threshold for Energy-Based Devices in China

MEDICAL AESTHETICS · TECHNICAL GLOSSARY

01

The Framework in Brief

China’s NMPA classifies medical devices into three risk classes: Class I (low risk, filing), Class II (moderate, registration) and Class III (higher, registration with strict review). Energy-based aesthetic devices that treat the body are mostly Class II or III — diode and Q-switched lasers for hair removal and pigment typically fall under Class III, while some RF and IPL devices are Class II. The classification catalog and determination files govern specifics.

02

Process and Timeline

  1. Product technical requirements and type testing.
  2. Clinical evaluation: predicate comparison if exempt-listed, otherwise clinical trials.
  3. Quality-system on-site inspection.
  4. Technical review and administrative approval.

Class III commonly takes 2-4 years from start to certificate — the reason unregistered or “cosmetic-grade” devices flood the market, skipping both the timeline and the safety review.

03

Verification Checklist for Clinics

  1. Look up the registration number and validity on the NMPA database.
  2. Match the certificate’s product name/model to the actual unit (against certificate borrowing).
  3. Confirm the intended-use wording covers the procedures you plan.
  4. Obtain manufacturing license and authorization letters — legal channel only.

LEIJEX registers products for China’s medical channel under the applicable class; see the quality and compliance page.

FAQ

Do registered devices work better?

Not necessarily — but risk differs enormously: unregistered units bypass electrical-safety, energy-accuracy and clinical review, with no recall, insurance or accountability path when things go wrong.

Can I buy imported devices without NMPA registration?

Not for human treatment — unregistered imported devices are illegal to use clinically; display or research scenarios (with filing) are separate.
