Thermal Design: Real Capacity Is Sustained Duty Without Derating

Heat Is Enemy Number One

Laser efficiency falls with temperature, capacitor life halves per temperature step, and hot handpiece windows burn skin. Thermal design defines the machine’s real capacity — spec sheets are measured at 25°C in a lab; your clinic’s afternoon is 35°C under continuous load.

Three-Stage Cooling

  1. Airflow: filtered intake → fans → heat exchanger → exhaust; short-circuited or dusty paths raise internal temperature fast.
  2. Water loop: deionized water carries heat from laser and power stages; tank size and radiator power set thermal inertia.
  3. TEC: semiconductor cooling pushes the contact window near freezing — the core of contact cooling.

Honest Thermal Metrics

Acceptance Test

  1. Simulate a real schedule: warm room, full load, 60-120 minutes.
  2. Log water temperature, energy output and window temperature.
  3. Compare first and last energy: <5% decay is good; >10% demands a thermal-design explanation.

FAQ

Frequent summer shutdowns — a fault?

Not necessarily — it may be thin thermal margin: ambient plus duty exceeding the design envelope. Improve ventilation first; the real fix is buying more thermal headroom.

Can I add ice to the chiller?

No. Quench cooling causes condensation and temperature oscillation, harming components and calibration. Fix ambient heat dissipation instead.
