Baseline Assessment Standards: No Baseline, No Outcome
Why Baselines Are the Other Half of Outcomes
“Did it work?” depends on the comparison — without a baseline, every efficacy talk is subjective. Baseline completeness decides whether results can be proven, plans calibrated, and disputes defended.
The Baseline Checklist
- Standard imaging: five-angle baseline (protocol), plus Wood’s-lamp/UV modes when indicated.
- Quantified metrics: the objective metrics for the program line (metrics) — measure everything on day one.
- Intake baseline: the full consultation form (form design).
- Lifestyle baseline: sunscreen habits, skincare routine, sleep and exercise — outcome variables go on file.
- Psychological baseline: satisfaction and distress scores (0-10) — the subjective half of outcomes.
Execution Discipline
- Always on visit one: a missing baseline is a process accident, not a blemish.
- Complete in one sitting: baselines scattered across visits drift (skin tone moves with seasons).
- Lock the standard: the baseline’s device, settings and environment stay fixed for the whole course.
- Missing-baseline remedy: declare the current state the new baseline in writing — never fabricate a retroactive one.
The Most-Missed Fields (self-audit)
- No subjective scores (photos without scales).
- No lifestyle record (attribution impossible later).
- Vague treatment history (“had laser” — which? when? at what settings?).
- One missing angle (the absent profile shot is a dispute regular).
FAQ
Client rushes to treatment, skipping assessment?
Compress, don’t skip: core imaging plus key metrics same day (15 minutes), the rest documented after — “the assessment is what makes your result provable” explains the value in one line.
Baselines from another clinic?
For unfinished courses elsewhere: current state becomes the new baseline, prior info recorded as background — don’t try to reconstruct someone else’s baseline.
