Hydration and Barrier Testing: From “Feels Dry” to Numbers

The Two Core Metrics

  1. Stratum-corneum hydration (capacitance meters): instant hydration — heavily influenced by recent products and ambient humidity; good for trends, not absolute comparisons.
  2. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL): the gold-standard proxy for barrier integrity — higher means leakier. The core objective metric for sensitive-skin and post-procedure evaluation (see sensitive skin).

Measurement Protocol (the price of trustworthy numbers)

  1. Acclimatize: 15-20 minutes seated in the measurement room (data from walk-ins is void).
  2. Environment: 18-22 °C, 40-60% RH, logged.
  3. 2 hours prior: no washing, products or makeup (or standardize to 30 min post-cleansing).
  4. Multi-point: 3-5 points per zone averaged (skin heterogeneity).
  5. Probe discipline: perpendicular, light touch — pressure distorts readings.

FAQ

Home hydration pens?

Same principle, weaker probes and no environment control — fine for trends, unreliable as absolute data.

Does high TEWL mean sensitive skin?

High TEWL means the barrier is leaking right now; sensitive skin is a symptom diagnosis. Barriers leak temporarily too (post-procedure, over-cleansing) — single values don’t diagnose; trends do.
