OEM, ODM and Private Label: Manufacturing Models Explained

\n

MEDICAL AESTHETICS · TECHNICAL GLOSSARY

01

Three Models Defined

Model Design lead Typical case Certificate owner
OEM Brand specs, factory builds Brand scaling capacity By contract; brand holds or dual-holds
ODM Factory platform + customization Brand entering fast Often brand-exclusive or region-exclusive
Private label Factory standard + brand label Asset-light entry Factory holds; brand licensed
02

Why Certificate Ownership Is the Core Clause

The registration holder bears regulatory responsibility. Under authorized-manufacturing regimes the brand can hold the certificate with the factory as contract manufacturer; if the factory holds it, the brand controls nothing about design changes, discontinuation, or resale to competitors. Contracts must fix: certificate ownership or bound licensing, exclusivity, change-process and discontinuation terms.

03

Assessing a Contract Manufacturer

  1. System and compliance: ISO 13485, target-market registration experience, recent audit record.
  2. Technology base: in-house core modules (lasers, RF sources, transducers) vs outsourced — determines iteration ability.
  3. IP: patent ownership and platform-sharing boundaries (your design must not reappear on competitors).
  4. Service and spares: committed spare-part supply years.
  5. Audit: see the factory audit checklist.

LEIJEX offers ODM platform partnerships alongside its own brands — models described on the OEM/ODM page.

FAQ

Who is liable when a private-label product fails?

Registration holder and actual manufacturer share per regulation and contract; as a buyer, assess the certificate holder’s capacity, not the label.

How do I enforce “exclusivity” in ODM?

Contractual regional/channel exclusivity plus hardware differentiation (e.g., custom handpiece IDs). Verbal exclusivity has no teeth.
