ISO 13485: The Common Language of Medical Device Quality Systems

What ISO 13485 Is

ISO 13485 (current edition 2016) is the quality-management standard for medical devices, covering the full lifecycle from design, purchasing and production through service. It is not a product-safety standard but proof of systemic capability to consistently produce conforming products — the backbone of, or highly compatible with, NMPA GMP, FDA QSR and MDR requirements.

Core Clauses and Audit Watch Points

Clause area Requirement What to check on site
Design Inputs/outputs, V&V, change control Design history files updated with iterations
Purchasing Supplier evaluation, incoming inspection Traceability of key parts (lasers, PSUs)
Production Work instructions, process validation, traceability Serial-number trace chain demonstrated live
Monitoring Process/final inspection, calibration Calibration certificates for energy meters
Nonconformity CAPA, recall procedure Closed-loop CAPA records from the past year

Certificate Value

Certificates come from certification bodies — but a certificate is not competence: mainstream bodies (TÜV, BSI, SGS) outweigh obscure registrars; the reliable method is an on-site audit with sample traceability. For buyers, 13485 is the entry ticket, not the guarantee.

LEIJEX operates under ISO 13485; see the quality page for an overview and audit hosting.

FAQ

Does a 13485 certificate mean no risk?

No. It proves a process exists, not that every execution is perfect — registration testing, clinical data and service records matter equally.

Is CE/FDA the same as 13485?

No. 13485 is a quality-system standard; CE-MDR/FDA registration is market authorization — the system is typically a prerequisite.
