IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): One Platform, Many Indications

01

What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light is broad-spectrum, incoherent light from a xenon lamp discharge, spanning roughly 400-1200 nm. Unlike monochromatic lasers, IPL delivers a continuous spectrum; cut-off filters (560/590/615/640 nm etc.) remove shorter wavelengths to select bands that target specific chromophores — allowing one handpiece to address pigment, vessels, hair and texture.

02

Mechanism: Still Selective Photothermolysis

IPL pulses are millisecond-scale and often delivered as multiple sub-pulses. Melanin, hemoglobin and water all absorb within its spectrum; epidermal cooling completes selective heating. Compared with lasers, IPL wastes more of its spectrum and is slightly less efficient per pass, but wins on speed, comfort and breadth of indications.

03

Technology Evolution: OPT / DPL / NIR

  • OPT (Optimal Pulse Technology): reshapes spiky pulses into near-square multi-sub-pulse profiles for better control, uniformity and safety.
  • DPL (Precision Pulsed Light): narrows the spectrum to ~500-600 nm (or 1000 nm+ NIR), boosting hemoglobin and melanin absorption for vascular and pigment work.
  • NIR: 900-1400 nm targets water for dermal heating and tightening.
04

Indications

  • Photoaging triad: pigment (lentigines, freckles), vessels (telangiectasia, flushing), texture (fine lines, pores)
  • Hair removal on face and body (most efficient on lighter skin)
  • Adjunctive management of rosacea and sensitive-skin syndromes (low-fluence protocols)

FAQ

IPL or laser — which is better?

No absolute answer: lasers are stronger for single deep targets; IPL wins on versatility, speed and comfort. Many clinics combine IPL as the base with specialty lasers for hard targets.

Can IPL cause more pigmentation?

With proper settings and strict photoprotection, PIH rates are low; excessive fluence or post-treatment sun exposure can trigger it, so calibrated output and cooling matter.
