Water Treatment and Chillers: The Loop Is the Device’s Bloodstream
Why Water Quality Rules Everything
Laser cooling loops are exquisitely sensitive: tap-water minerals and ions cause scale, corrosion and rising conductivity — scale cuts heat transfer (derating), corrosion punches leaks, conductivity trips alarms. Non-spec water is the first cause of loop failures and premature laser aging (the water lines of the maintenance table).
Standards and Practice
- Spec water: per the manual (usually deionized/purified plus the vendor’s biocide formula), resistivity and conductivity in range.
- Filling discipline: dedicated containers and funnels, no foreign contamination; fills logged.
- Change intervals: vendor cadence (typically 1-3 months) plus triggers — cloudiness, odor.
- Biocide: dosed as specified to stop biofilm (algae and slime plug flow switches).
Chiller Maintenance Nodes
- Daily: level, temperature, flow-alarm status by eye.
- Weekly: filter check, visual leak scan at fittings.
- Quarterly: condenser dust-off, temperature calibration, water test (strips/conductivity meter).
Early Signs of Loop Trouble
- Water temperature climbing faster than usual (heat transfer dropping).
- Intermittent flow alarms (falling flow or dirty sensor).
- Cloudy water, odor, or flocculates (biofilm or corrosion).
Any sign schedules a water change and deep check — from sign to shutdown is usually days.
FAQ
Distilled instead of deionized?
Most manuals accept purified/distilled, but additives (biocide) follow the vendor’s formula exactly — invented recipes are a classic accident source.
Winter care?
Freeze protection: cold rooms can crack loops — apply the vendor’s winter settings (drain or approved antifreeze); unheated holidays deserve special attention.
